Cooper Hurley Client from Hampton ‘Was Saved by Motorcycle Helmet’

By Jim Hurley, Hampton Motorcycle Injury Lawyer

I have written in the past a lot about how wearing a motorcycle helmet may be the difference between life and death. That’s not just a fanciful notion. There are a lot of studies out there that make it clear how your chances of surviving a biking accident are better if you are wearing a helmet.

A helmet is no guarantee that you will escape serious head injuries if you are involved in a motorcycle accident. But wearing a helmet is the law in Virginia and it will improve your odds.

Recently Cooper Hurley client Shari Ross, who was seriously injured in Hampton, Virginia, in a bike crash, revealed how she believes her helmet saved her life. You can see her video here.

We were pleased to be able to help Shari. As well as wearing a helmet, there is a lot of other protective – and indeed reflective gear – that you should wear if you are riding a motorcycle.

In Virginia, a motorcyclist must by law wear a helmet and a face shield, goggles or safety glasses. His or her motorcycle should be equipped with safety glass or a windshield.

Wearing a helmet is the most important part of the equation. I can point to many studies that show the incidence of brain injury rose in states which repealed its compulsory helmet laws. Large increases in the number of head injury deaths and hospitalizations were reported in Pennsylvania in the two years following the repeal of the state’s motorcycle helmet law in 2003, according to a recent study in the American Journal of Public Health.

You should also make sure your helmets comply with regulations as there are some on the market that fail to offer adequate protection.
